Design of digital Reading — Reading in digital media is omnipresent. However, discussions of this topic often stick to the comparison between digital and analog reading instead of dealing with the specific issues.

The ReadOn conference will address the question of how today’s digital reading media must be designed to meet the diverse demands.

New forms of reading have developed in digital media. The possibilities of linking text and communication, semantic mark-up, annotation and much more require a reading concept that goes far beyond linear reading, and this also results in consequences for the design of these texts.

Typography must be able to react to flexible content in digital media. This does away with one constant of classical typography: the fixed format. Texts and picture elements should adapt flexibly to different formats. All elements from font to layout seem to become unstable.

This presents the designers of these media with new challenges. How is it possible to maintain a quality trained in traditional typography?

ReadOn would like to investigate the problems and opportunities of designing, enriching and publishing digital media, and ask how expanded digital reading can be usefully designed, what skills authors and designers of digital texts should possess, which changed, expanded forms of digital reading make sense, and which questions will arise in the future when it comes to the design of digital text media.

He is one of the leading experts in the development of new content experiences for media companies and brands, which he develops in close cooperation with their editorial and product teams. His work ranges from media companies such as The Economist, Zeit Online, NZZ, ProSiebenSat1 and Ringier to global consumer brands such as Red Bull and Red Bull Media House. He has won support from the Google Digital News Initiative for two innovation projects in collaboration with editorial offices.

Prof. Dr. Svenja Hagenhoff

Dr. Svenja Hagenhoff has been Professor of Book Studies at the Institute of Book Studies at Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg since 2011, specializing in e-publishing and digital markets. There she is, among other things, the coordinator of the research segment ‘Opportunities and challenges of digitization’. She is a member of numerous research organizations and projects, as well as being a member of the board of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences, the German Communication Association, the Association of Internet Researchers, and more. In addition to various other projects, she leads the research project ‘Delivery Quality of Digital Typeface’, which analyzes the digital variants of print products.

Hover States is an industry-leading blog showcasing the best in alternative digital design. Through it’s openness towards experimental and new forms it has become a good source of upcoming trends and a showcase of what is possible with current web technologies. The project was started by James Chambers in 2012, and is now being maintained and curated by Mike Guppy, Dan Powell, Nate van der Ende and Simon Neveu.

Frank Rausch

Frank Rausch works as an interface designer, app developer and specialist for digital typography. He is co-founder and managing director of Raureif, a Berlin-based consulting firm for interaction design.

In his work, Frank Rausch uses the latest technologies and algorithms to design high-quality digital reading interfaces. He teaches app design and typography at universities in Graz, Copenhagen, Potsdam and St. Gallen.

Niels Schrader

Niels Schrader (VE/DE) is a concept-driven information designer with a fascination for numbers and data. He is founder of the Amsterdam-based design studio Mind Design and member of the advisory panel for the Creative Industries Fund NL. Schrader graduated in communication design at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf and further completed his academic studies in the master programme Design at the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam. Next to his design practice Schrader writes regularly for the German design magazine Novum. He has lectured at various academies and universities in- and outside Europe and is together with Roosje Klap head of the bachelor Graphic Design and master Non-Linear Narrative at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

Die Hochschule ist erreichbar von einer Ausfahrt des Mainzer Autobahnrings in Richtung Innenstadt. Folgen Sie den Schildern in Richtung »Rheingoldhalle« oder »Rathaus« und dann der Rheinstraße bis zum Holzturm. Bitte nutzen Sie das Parkhaus im Fort Malakoff Park in der Dagobertstraße. Auf Grund begrenzter Parkmöglichkeiten empfehlen wir die Anreise mit der Bahn.

Anreise per Bahn

Die Hochschule ist vom Bahnhof Mainz/Römisches Theater in wenigen Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen, (Richtung Rhein, Rheingoldhalle/Rathaus) wir empfehlen die Reiseauskunft der Deutschen Bahn.
